| Reception have made a flying and confident start to the year. We have a great outside play area where the children spend lunchtimes and lesson times. If your child is going to be starting in the Reception Class, you can help to prepare them by….. - Encouraging Independence - They need to be used to sitting at a table for meals and eating their own food. - Personal hygiene – they need to be able to go to the toilet themselves - They need to be able to get dressed and undressed ready for PE - They need to be able to put on their own coat and carry their own things. - Encouraging good social skills: - Good manners - Please, thank you, excuse me, sorry - Taking turns and sharing - Resolving problems - explaining how you feel or what happened -Encouraging learning - Help them to love books and enjoy stories and picture books. - Help them to hold a pencil correctly if they want to draw and write. -Talk to your child all the time, asking them questions and encouraging them to explore the world around them. The Reception Curriculum involves a wide range of areas of learning: - Personal, Social and Emotional Development - Communication, Language and Literacy - Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy - Knowledge and Understanding of the World - Physical Development - Creative Development Our day is broken up into small periods of time so that the children don’t get bored. 8:50 Play at tables 9:15 Carpet time together - Phonics focus 9:30 Literacy focus choice with Teacher/TA focus groups 10:00 Snack time 10:20 Outside play time - just Reception 10:40 Carpet time together - Maths focus 11:00 Maths focus choice with Teacher TA focus groups 11:45 Lunch (15 minutes with just Reception) 12:45 Video time/rest time 1:15 Creative - Art and making Knowledge and Understanding - Exploring Physical - Ride on toys Small World/Role Play/Sand and Water 2:15 Outside playtime (sometimes with Y1/Y2) 2:30 Prepare for home and storytime 3:10 Collective Worship 3:15 Home time So far this year the children are very good at….. - Coming in and putting their things in the right place - Answering the register and remembering what they are having for lunch - Playing together - They are getting used to tidying up after a play time, doing a job before they go and play and the routines and class rules. How do they learn to read and write? We learn about three sounds a week and we also learn to recognise some words that we cannot sound. We change reading books three times a week and encourage parents to hear children read each night. When we know some sounds, we put them together to make words with the help of Robot Dog! We practise lots of letter patterns and say what we are doing as we write. We do lots of top to bottom shapes, arch shapes and sharp shapes like dragon’s teeth! Most of the children learn to write their name in the first few weeks. What about maths and numbers? We start by recognising our numbers, then putting them in order. We count everything! We play with shapes, make patterns and measure things. Play every day! We play every day with cars, trains, sand, water, in a play house, in the playground, on bikes and scooters, using hoops and footballs. We go on the climbing frame and on bouncers. We try to make the Reception day as much fun as possible so that the learning is taking place all the time but without being boring. |
