Welcome

Kenya- School and Parish Partnership

At Layer de la Haye School, we have a growing partnership with Archibishop Gitari School in the Embu area of Kenya. The partnership is organised by the Diocese of Chelmsford and there are currently over 25 schools in the area linked with a Kenyan school. The purpose of the partnership is to develop links between schools to encourage global learning which involves looking at the similarities and differences between the schools and to explore areas from the Global Dimension document. A Global School Partnership aims to motivate young people's commitment to a fairer, more sustainable world. It promotes global education through the curriculum.

Archibishop Gitari School is a fee paying boarding school where the children spend three months at a time at school, only seeing their parents on one visitor’s day in the middle of the term. The teachers there are proud of their record of high achieving results in the national examinations. Our children exchange letters with children at Archibishop Gitari School and we also exchange work prepared on different projects.

Mrs Wilkie, the head teacher made the first visit with a Governor, Mrs Keeble. They brought back lots of information to share with us as well as lots of photographs of our link school. Since then, the head teacher of Archibishop Gitari, Mrs Lydia Mutegi has visited us to see how our children learn. She took lots of ideas back to Kenya.

Mrs Basker and Mr Gledhill then visited and brought back lots of videos of the children playing and learning. They discussed with the Kenyan children ideas about fairness and career ambitions.

Most recently, the Deputy Head and a Senior Teacher from Kenya visited our school. During their stay they worked with the Global Dimension Team here at Layer to plan a 3 year project to be carried out by both schools. The children were thrilled by their visit and enjoyed hearing their news of Archibishop Gitari School.

We hope you enjoy looking at the pictures and if you have any questions, please ask Mrs Basker or Mrs Baxter as they plan to visit Archibishop Gitari School in February, 2012.
