Key Skills

‘'developing independent thinking through enquiry and Problem Solving.’

At the end of last year we did a survey with the adults and children in school and they told us that they thought independent thinking and learning was a very important skill to have, so it could help them now and in the future. All the classes at Layer school are developing their independent learning through our ‘Key Skills’ approach. This focus’ in on two important areas, enquiry and problem solving, and each class has targets linked to these areas, which are changed termly.

The children are given opportunities in their lessons and through homework to learn and apply the key skills in order to develop their independent thinking and learning. All children in Key Stage 2 (Years 3,4,5 & 6) have a personal password that enables them to upload evidence to a personal online portfolio (Key Skills Tracker). This shows how they have been developing these skills. It’s not just about learning at school though. We hope, that as parents and grandparents, you would embrace this concept and help by talking about and doing problem - solving activities at home. Should you require any information or if you would like to talk about ‘Key Skill’s’ then please come in and see your child’s teacher or Mr. Gledhill.
